Since the series started in 2012, each year has been a completely different experience. It is every artists dream to create a legacy and the ‘12 Natural Wonders’ series is Paul Giggle’s. Paul has been fortunate enough to have worked as a publisher, fashion photographer and Director creating imagery for campaigns and editorials all over the world and it was time for him to do something for himself. Having now completed 7 out of the intended 12 series’,
This year Paul felt a strong urge to go back to a more natural feel after the very colourful Japan series. Scandanavia was definitely on his wish list, so he started looking at locations. The diversity and textures in the Norwegian landscapes especially. He has have always loved the honesty and simplicity of black and white and felt this medium was the perfect combination for shooting nudes within the epic landscapes. The 12 Natural Wonders series’ pays homage to the female form. This collection, Paul to be timeless, and focused on the textures of the landscapes that would complement the textures of the skin and hair.
This series certainly was one of his easiest. The weather was amazing each day and the girls where so keen to be involved, and of course, no styling had to be done. The producer, Brigitte, originally from Australia, now lives in Norway, had recently been working on a Tom Cruise film and had some great locations suggestions. After a couple of days all of the locations where sorted and we where ready to shoot!
Paul only had 4 days to shoot 12 images, 3 shots a day. With no lighting and just his Leica M246, that enabled him much more freedom to reach some of the locations. At times the crew had to jump over huge rocks and navigate some really tricky terrain in order to reach the ideal locations - this would have been almost impossible with a medium format kit. The Leica Monochrom has anincredible tonal range and is probably the closest to the original film look - especially with the M series lenses. Paul packed a 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 75mm, but mostly used the 28mm.
